Minister of Religious Affairs Yaakov Margi has declared that he plans to quit his job if his ministry is required to fund the hiring of non-orthodox rabbis as community leaders. Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein said Tuesday that municipalities may use state money to pay salaries for non-orthodox rabbis, but that their opinions will not influence halachic (Jewish legal) rulings.

Non-orthodox Jewish movements differ significantly from traditional Judaism in the interpretation of Jewish law.
