At the request of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, ministers will meet Sunday to discuss a solution for Givat Ha'ulpana in Beit El. The High Court has ordered the neighborhood demolished, but a majority of ministers are opposed to the move. Defense Minister Ehud Barak, who has the final say on the neighborhood's fate, will not be participating in the discussion, as he is abroad.
Netanyahu has been seeking a legal solution to the demand by the court that the neighborhood be demolished, such as compensation to Arab families who claim ownership of the land. Netanyahu said last week that the destruction of the neighborhood would be “an edict that the public will not be able to tolerate.” In an interview with Israel Radio Sunday morning, Environment Minister Gilad Erdan said he did not believe the neighborhood would be demolished.
