Students from universities in Israel will be participating in a round of the Concrete Canoe contest, in which students build a canoe made of concrete and try to sail it. This year, students from the Technion, Ben Gurion University, the Bezalel School of Art and the Shenkar School of Engineering and Design, among others, will meet on Wednesday at Monfort Lake in northern Israel and compete in the canoe competition with vessels they built themselves.
Points will be awarded for design, seaworthiness of the vessels, the amount of “green” material used in its construction, and the navigation skills of the two person crew in each vessel. The contest originated in the U.S. in 1971, and was first held in Israel in the early 1980s.
