Ben-Zion Leitner Passes Away at the Age of 85

Ben-Zion Leitner, who received Israel's Medal of Valor on its first Independence Day, passed away, Sunday evening, at the age of 85. His funeral is scheduled for Monday in the Herzliya military cemetery.

The native of Odessa fought with the partisans against Germany in World War II. During Israel's war of independence, he led an assault, under heavy fire, on an Iraqi police position in Al-Souedan, blowing up a bunker, but not before its occupants managed to inflict severe stab wounds that left Leitner's face half paralyzed.
