Groundbreaking took place on Wednesday for a new community in the Negev to be called Carni Katif. The community will be populated by deportees from the Gush Katif of the region in the Gaza Strip. 34 families from Gush Katif and 26 other families are scheduled to move in. The community is located in the Lachish Regional Council district of the Negev.
The Israeli government deported approximately 8,000 Jewish residents from Gaza during the 2005 Disengagement.
