Rabbi Amar: Speed Up Ethiopian Immigration

Chief Sephardic Rabbi Shlomo Amar has expressed his sorrow about the recent reduction in the immigration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel. His stance was written in a letter to Chairman Danny Danon of the Knesset Committee for Immigration, Absorption and Diaspora Affairs, which Danon read into the record at the beginning of a hearing, Tuesday morning, on the findings of the Inter-Office Committee on the subject of remaining Ethiopian immigrants. Rabbi Amar said it was a matter of saving Jewish souls from their place in the Diaspora.

In endorsing the rabbi's words, Danon said the slowdown had to stop, adding that Israel had to bring all the Ethiopian Jews home to Israel and to absorb them in the best possible way to fit in with the Israeli society at large.
