Being an unsatisfying amount of liquid, 1.35 fluid ounces is the amount of liquid that may be ingested on Yom Kippur by someone in dire health. This amount may also be ingested by Jewish soldiers in the IDF who are operational on Yom Kippur. Since lives are at stake, the IDF operates on Yom Kippur, and the soldiers can follow this Halakhic leniency without actually breaking their fast. Every 9 minutes a soldier in need of sweetened liquids can drink a tiny sachet containing 1.35 fl.oz. and is still considered observing Yom Kippur.

The Sa’ad Umarpeh  (Nursing and Remedy) organization has donated some 15,000 sachets to the IDF for this purpose.
