The city of Jerusalem has rejected a request by local students to set up a tent city in protest of high housing prices. The students had set up tents outside the walls of the Old City, across from the Mamilla mall.
Jerusalem officials refused to authorize the event due to concerns that it could harm tourism in the city. “The city supports the young protesters' cause, but we cannot approve the protest in this place, where it would harm the city due to its strategic importance regarding tourism,” they said. “Protests cannot be held [there], as they cannot be held at the Western Wall or in Yad Vashem.”
