In reference to current reports of numerous deaths due to E. Coli-contaminated Spanish cucumbers, the Health Ministry clarifies that there has not been any recent import of fresh vegetables from Spain.
All fresh produce imports undergo microbiological screening.
The Ministry stresses that proper hygienic handling of fruits and vegetables in the kitchen provides protection of public health.
Washing produce in warm water and soap;
Washing hands with soap prior to handling of produce;
Separation of fresh agricultural produce from raw, unprocessed foods (for example: Meat, eggs, etc.)
The cucumber investigation in Europe is still under way. The Health Ministry will update the public accordingly.
