MK Avraham Michaeli of Shas presented on Monday two bills that would fight ethnic discrimination in educational institutions.

The first bill includes some revisions to the students’ rights law. These revisions would see the responsibility on discrimination lying on the director of education and/or directors of the non-profit organization in which the educational institution is run.

The second bill would see the assignment of areas of registration to schools, which will require schools to accept all students from the same region without any discrimination. The Minister of Education would determine the registration areas in consultation with local authorities.

Shas officials stressed that the proposals received the approval of the party’s spiritual leader, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef.
