4/9/2011, Nissan 5, 5771MK Herzog: Israel May Take Back Gaza
Israel is close to once again liberating the Hamas-controlled Gaza region, Labor party leadership candidate Yitzhak Herzog said Saturday.
In a meeting with the party's young guard, Herzog said: "We are closer to conquering Gaza than we are to a lull... a wise government would take aggressive diplomatic initiative vis-à-vis the Palestinian Authority, while at the same time engaging in an all-out war against terror and Hamas – this is the only way to reach a long-term solution."
Israel's Gaza region was taken by Egypt in the 1948 War and liberated by Israel 19 years later during the Six Day War. The Ariel Sharon government, under pressure from United States President George W. Bush, forcibly expelled all Jewish residents and surrendered the region in 2005. Within two years, the area was taken over by Hamas.
