Opponents of Libyan leader Muamar Qaddafi stopped an attack by Qaddafi loyalists on Monday in the city of Misurata, 200 kilometers (130 miles) east of the capital Tripoli.
An eyewitness reported that the rebels downed aircraft of the loyalist forces.
