The Syrian and Iranian navy commanders have signed a memorandum of understanding dealing with training exercises and an exchange of experts, according to Iranian sources cited by the London-based Ash-Sharq Il-Awsat Arabic daily on Sunday. The sources stressed that Iranian ships will continue to go to Syria and Syrian ships have been invited to the Islamic Republic.

The memorandum was signed aboard the two Iranian ships currently in Syria, the first ones to travel through the Suez Canal since the revolution that deposed the shah in 1979.
