Libya Suspended from Arab League

Two Libyan battleships shelled the port city of Benghazi on Tuesday night. Reports said that Benghazi was in the hands of rebel forces. Large demonstrations have been going on against Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in the city throughout the day.

On Tuesday night, the Arab League suspended Libya from participating in League events. Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa told reporters in Cairo that the League “condemns crimes against the current peaceful popular protests and demonstrations in several Libyan cities,” and called on Gaddafi to “respect Libyans’ right to freedom of protest and expression.”
