Two Libyan fighter planes which landed in Malta Monday evening carried senior air force officers who sought political asylum in the Mediterranean European country after they claimed they refused to take part in the suppession of the continuing demonstrations in the country.
The two colonels claim they left their base and flew low to avoid identification. They were interrogated by Maltese immigration authorities. There had been speculation that dictator Muamar Ghadaffi had taken the planes to escape the unrest.
