The latest batch of Wikileaks documents features a cable in which former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is quoted as saying that former Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin was the “most difficult” leader she had ever dealt with, and that Israel, due to its “mood of isolation and defiance” might use nuclear weapons in an upcoming war. The cable, sent in 1980 from the UK Embassy in Tel Aviv, says that if Israel was threatened with destruction, “they will go down fighting this time. They will be ready to use their atomic weapon. Because they cannot sustain a long war, they would have to use it early."
She also called Begin's plans to develop Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria “unrealistic” and “absurd,” and was appalled when Begin told her that “Judea and Samaria had been Jewish in biblical times and that they should therefore be so today."
