Advocates for foreign workers on Tuesday urged Tel Aviv mayor Ron Huldai to intervene and ban a planned protest Tuesday night in the Hatikvah section of the city against illegal workers. The Foreign Workers Helpline organization, in a letter to Huldai, said that the protest was likely to include racist comments and would be “hurtful to the feelings of foreign workers.”
Protesters at the rally Tuesday night are expected to call on the government to stiffen the penalties against employers of illegal workers, and for police and immigration officials to enforce the law against such employers more stringently.
