In his weekly lecture Saturday night, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef said that “fire is only found in a place where the Sabbath is violated.” Rabbi Yosef said that the Carmel fire struck at some homes which were destroyed, and that the destruction was not by chance, but directed from Heaven, and that the victims needed to examine their actions and lifestyle. Learning Torah and repentance, especially for matters involving Sabbath observance, should be the lesson Jews carry with them from the tragedy, he said.
