After Israel's recent discovery of natural gas in the Mediterranean, Turkey announced over the weekend that it would search for oil off the coast of Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus. The announcement follows a similar one last week by Lebanon that it, too, was seeking natural resources in the Mediterranean.
Turkish officials said they were already speaking with several energy companies on development and sale of whatever gas or oil would be found in the area of exploration. However, since the Turkish occupation of northern Cyprus is not recognized by any country, Turkey is likely to face legal challenges to its claim of ownership. Northern Cyprus, which is not recognized as an independent country, is run by a Turkish-installed puppet government.
