Zoabi Calls 'Jewish State' a Source of Racism

During the Rosh Hashanah holiday late last week, Member of Knesset Chanin Zoabi (Balad-Arab National Assembly) was the guest of honor at the 80th annual Festival of Humanity organized by the French leftist newspaper l'Humanité, associated with the country's communist party. In a speech to the gathering she said racism against immigrants and other minorities in France was in opposition to the principles of the French Republic while racism against Arabs in Israel was a direct result of the definition of Israel as a "Jewish state".

MK Zoabi said personal attacks on her are not just as a result of her having taken part in what she called the "freedom flotilla" for Gaza but "from the democratic challenge that Balad poses against the Israeli consensus." She added, "What's absurd in Israel is that whoever seeks democracy and coexistence based on justice and equality is thought of as extremist and his rights are negated."
