Supreme Court justices discussed Wednesday a petition by the parents of victims of the Kabbel disaster against the appointment of Brigadier General Rabbi Rafi Peretz to the  position of IDF Chief Rabbi position. The parents claim he abandoned their injured sons in the tragedy.

During the hearing, the petitioners expressed bitter criticism of Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi and Defense Minister Ehud Barak, who did not agree to meet with the parents before making the decision to appointment Rabbi Peretz.

Attorney Eliad Shraga, who represents the families, said he does not understand how Rabbi Peretz could have been sent to Romania to help find the dead helicopter soldiers after he showed lack of moral authority in the Kabbel affair.

Peretz was also highly critized during the destruction of Gush Katif for opposing calls to soldiers to disobey their eviction orders.
