Syria denied Thursday that it had transferred Scud missiles to Hizbullah in Lebanon. A Syrian government spokesman said that Israel was behind the rumors that the missiles had been sent to Hizbullah. Speaking to reporters, Ahmed Salkini said that the reports were designed to break up the increasingly warm ties between Syria and the United States.
On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters that the U.S. was “obviously increasingly concerned about the sophisticated weaponry that is allegedly being transferred” to Hizbullah. We have expressed our concerns to those governments and believe that steps should be taken to reduce any risk and any danger of anything from happening,” adding that the transfer could have a destabilizing effect on the Middle East.
