Hareidi Protests on Shabbat over Karta Lot Opening

Jerusalem's hareidi-religious community plans protests starting on Friday night on Bar-Ilan Boulevard in reaction to Thursday's decision to open the Karta parking lot near the Jaffa Gate to the Old City on Shabbat, according to a Friday morning report on Army Radio.

Rabbi Yosef Rosenfeld of the committee for Sabbath observance in Jerusalem told the station, referring to the parking fees that will be collected, "We cannot be quiet about such a profaning of the Sabbath."

The Karta lot opening was approved Thursday in place of operating the Safra parking lot at City Hall, whose opening on Shabbat sparked violent demonstrations in recent weeks. In preparing for the demonstrations, the police say, "If the Safra lot was open, the demonstrations would be much bigger."
