The Quartet, after meeting with Israeli, Jordanian and Palestinian Authority officials in Sharm el-Sheikh Sunday night, stated its "commitment to the irreversibility of the bilateral negotiations" and "pledged to respect the bilateral and confidential nature of the negotiation." The Quartet comprises the United States, the United Nations, the European Union (EU) and Russia.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stated that both Chairman Mahmoud Abba and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni "reached a number of mutual understandings on the principles governing their negotiating process." He added that they have agreed that there will no interim steps and that a new Arab state will be created only after all issues are resolved.
