Jordan Summons Israeli Envoy over Work at Temple Mount

Jordan has revived charges that Israel is illegally excavating the site at the Rambam (Mughrabi) Gate at the Temple Mount and has summoned the Israeli Ambassador. Abu Hdeib, head of the Jordanian parliament's lower house committee on international affairs, accused Israel of violating the 1994 peace treaty with Jordan by planning to build a bridge at the gate.

He told the French news agency AFP that the project "threatens the foundations of Al Aqsa…[and] would also lead to a new violent conflict in the Middle East because Jerusalem is a red line for Muslims and Arabs."

Foreign Minister Salah Bashir said he talked with ambassadors of the European Union (EU), Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States to persuade them to pressure Israel to refrain "from making unilateral moves in Jerusalem that would change the legal status of the holy city."
