After the Kinneret dropped below the lower red line yesterday, former head of the National Water Authority Dan Zaslavsky said in an Israel Radio interview that the water level may fall below the “black line”; at this level the Kinneret’s surface is lower than the pumping stations intake pipes and water cannot be pumped from the lake into the National Water Carrier.
The current shortage will also severely harm agriculture, leading to "enormous" sums in damages according to Zaslavsky. He also criticized Finance Ministry officials who oppose the desalination of seawater due to high costs. He said that the economic damage due to water shortage will far exceed the investment needed for desalination.
