A Border Guard policeman shot himself in the head at Ben Gurion International Airport during the departure ceremony for French President Nicolas Sarkozy, although it is not clear whether the shooting was due to an accidental discharge of the officer's weapon or not. President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert were both present when the shot was fired.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) staff immediately implemented emergency procedures and moved officials into protected vehicles and President Sarkozy to his plane.

"A Border Guard policeman, who had been shot, was found in the area a few minutes later. The circumstances of the incident are under investigation," said the statement.
