MK Uri Ariel (NU/NRP) said Thursday that the Knesset was wrong to allow German leader Angela Merkel to address it in German next Tuesday. Ariel mentioned that the weekly Torah portion for this Shabbat includes the command "remember what Amalek did to you" and that the Germans "are Amalekites. They are the father of the Amalekites. No Amalekite like them has ever been born." Ariel compared the Knesset decision to "crawling" and behaving like "rags" (smartooteem).
MK Aryeh Eldad (NU/NRP) said he would leave the plenum when Merkel spoke: "I cannot hear German in the Knesset plenum. It is the language in which my grandfather and grandmother were murdered."
Merkel is not the first leader to address the Knesset in German. She was preceded by German President Horst Kohler in 2005 and EU Parliament President Hans Gert Poettering in 2007.
