Livni Meets Gen. Jones, Complains About Kassams

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni met U.S. envoy to Israel Gen. (ret.) Jim Jones and reportedly discussed the security situation and "the ways in which the security issue should be treated in future agreements," according to Haaretz.

Livni complained to Jones about the ongoing Kassam rocket attacks from Gaza. "The Kassam fire is not stopping and just today we saw a meaningful escalation of [the Kassam attacks]," she said. "The required way of dealing with the security issue is not just in the context of what will be written in a future agreement, and we have to… give a solution to the situation on the ground right now."

"The situation in Gaza has to be taken into account in any diplomatic process," Livni told Jones. "This is not a territorial dispute: we have left Gaza and the fire is continuing and getting worse," she said. "A solution to Israel's security needs is not an obstacle to peace; it is a basic condition for any peace agreement."
