Olmert Agrees to Joint Declaration, Timetable

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas agreed to a joint statement for the Annapolis conference on Tuesday.  The statement was read aloud by United States President George Bush as the conference began.  The statement calls for “an end to the bloodshed and a Palestinian state.”

While Israeli negotiators have resisted the PA’s demands for a timetable, the statement calls for intense negotiations to begin on December 12, 2007 and for the creation of a final agreement in 2008, Bush’s last year in power.  Bush said his goal was to “stand against terror, whether it’s carried out by Palestinians or Israelis.”
