Maj. (res.) David Shamir, a 45 year old psychiatrist, was charged in Tel Aviv's District Court Friday with offering his services as a spy to Iran and other foreign agents. Shamir is charged with attempts at spying, contact with a foreign agent and obstruction of justice. He was arrested by the SHABAK (General Security Service) and police officers from a unit that specializes in international security offenses and is currently behind bars.
The prosecution contended that during his reserve duty, Shamir saw classified materials including emergency Medical Corps plans, plans showing the distribution of medical corps and control centers, plans for evacuation of civilians in case of a missile attack and various operational and intelligence assessments.
In April, Shamir decided to try and sell information to foreign elements for a profit and contacted the Iranian Foreign Office by e-mail. Several days later, the charge sheet says, "he was contacted by the elements he had contacted." In August, he sent a fax to the Iranian consulate in London from his home and on November 3, he contacted a Gaza university controlled by Hamas and said he was an Israeli "interested in joining the struggle." He also contacted Russian officials by e-mail and offered to spy for them.
The physician's attempts at spying were ultimately unsuccessful and never reached the operational phase, according to the charge sheet.
