The Knesset approved the appointment of Avigdor Lieberman as the Minister of Strategic Planning in a 61-38 vote. Many members of the Labor and Likud parties absented themselves from the vote, including Labor's Ofir Paz-Pines, who resigned as Minister of Science, Culture and Sport after casting the only cabinet vote against Lieberman's Yisrael Beiteinu (Israel Is Our Home) party. Likud leader Binyamin Netanyahu was among those Knesset members voting against the appointment.

--Prime Minister Ehud Olmert declared that the threat of Hizbullah attacks against Israel no longer exists and "that once was, will not be" in the future. 

--The Bush administration has begun arming and training the militia under the control of PLO chairman and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas under the premise that his men will clash with the ruling Hamas terror group.

--A poll carried out several days before the 11th anniversary of the assassination of former Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin shows that almost half of the population thinks the expulsion of Jews from the Gaza and northern Samarian regions created a far greater rift than the murder of Rabin.
