U.S. to Give Unprecedented Sum to PA: $410M

The United States will give the Palestinian Authority an unprecedented $410 million in direct aid in an effort to bolster PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas's standing on the eve of the Annapolis diplomatic conference.

Ynet reports that half of the U.S. aid will be slated to go to infrastructure, $35 million will go to United Nations relief group UNRWA, and the rest will go to the PA's operating budget. Sources in Washington said the aid shows the great importance that the Bush administration sees in the need to support Abbas "in their efforts to reach concrete achievements on the ground for the Palestinian public."

The special aid package is included in a bill that adds $46 billion to the current U.S. budget.
