Rice: 'Let's Be Real. There is a Security Problem'

Visiting American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told reporters Wednesday night that her visit to Bethlehem, where Israel is erecting a separation barrier, did not hide the security problem Israel faces. Arab leaders earlier in the day expressed the hope that she would see the barrier as an infringement on their rights.

"Let's be real. There is a security problem," she said. "No one wants to have barriers, but there is a security barrier there. We've been told many, many times and been assured that it's not a political barrier and it cannot be a political barrier."

Commenting on the American training of Palestinian Authority (PA) forces, she stated, "We're not just [supporting] them for terrorism and for their international obligations, but also for the security of the Palestinian people. The Palestinian people don't want to live in lawlessness. They don't want to live with gangs running in their streets."
