Police Prevent Girl’s Suicide, Are Attacked
Police officers who stopped a teenaged girl from committing suicide on Tuesday were attacked shortly afterwards by her family. Two police officers noticed the girl, an Arab resident of Jerusalem, as she climbed over a protective barrier next to a cliff in Ein Gedi. The officers managed to reach the girl in time, with one officer grabbing her hand as she jumped from the cliff and pulling her to safety.
Shortly after the incident, four of the girl’s family members began attacking the police, kicking them and spitting on them. Police say that the four, who were drunk, were trying to release the girl from police custody.
An initial investigation showed that the girl’s father died one year ago, and she hoped to join him by killing herself. Police said the girl is receiving psychological care. One of the officers expressed surprise that her family did not thank them, saying “if we’d come even half a minute later, she would be dead.”
