MK Shelly Yechimovich (Labor) warned Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, the Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv and former Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel, not to run for the presidency. “He shouldn’t consider running,” Yechimovich said.
If he does run, she said, “incidents from the past” would come to light. Yechimovich did not explain what she was referring to, saying only that “things it’s better not to have revealed” would be revealed if Rabbi Lau did not obey her.
While many believe that Rabbi Lau will join the presidential race, he has not officially announced his candidacy, and has called reports that he will run for office “speculation.”
