Former Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom has charged that the Olmert administration's policies have signaled the European Union (EU) to back surrendering the Golan Heights to Syria. Javier Solana, foreign policy advisor for the EU, stated during a visit to Damascus Wednesday that he will support forcing Israel to give up the strategic Golan area.
Shalom told Voice of Israel government radio that Solana simply is following the lead of Israel in surrendering to terrorism. He explained that Israel's weakness is shown by its holding back-door talks with Syria and giving $100 million to the Palestinian Authority (PA), which cannot account for where the money went.
