A Gaza-like underground bombing attack was thwarted in the Shomron yesterday - thanks to swift intelligence work. For the first time, Palestinian terrorists attempted to import to Samaria an attack method that they used "successfully" in Gaza. They buried a 30-kilogram explosive under a dirt road near Jenin that is used almost exclusively by the army. The bomb was to be detonated by remote control as an IDF vehicle and its occupants passed by.
Of concern is not only the fact that the terrorists are attempting to turn the Shomron into Gaza, but also that PA elements are stepping up their activities to ward off potential informants from cooperating with Israel. The loss of such sources would severely hamper Israeli intelligence efforts. Just a few days ago, Abu Radab, who commands the Informant Liquidation Unit in the PA-controlled areas, shot to death an elderly suspected "collaborator" in front of a fired-up crowd in a public square.
Abu Radab explained afterwards to reporters that he has no regrets: "We told the crowd that this man did such-and-such and collaborated with Israel, and what should be done with him? All of them, more than 1,000 people, said unanimously that he should be killed... I would do the same to one of my own assistants if they would dare just to think about cooperating with Israel... This was an act of deterrence so that others will think 1,000 times before they continue their ties with Israeli intelligence."
