An airport in Hamburg, Germany, closed Saturday after an armed man rammed a vehicle through the security gate and fired shots into the air, Sky News reported.

According to federal police, the man broke through a gate with his vehicle and fired twice into the air, local media reported.

Local police also said the man's wife had contacted them previously, regarding a potential child abduction.

German media outlets also said that the shooter had two children in his vehicle. Later, dpa confirmed that at least one child was in the vehicle, but was unable to confirm the second child's presence.

"We are currently assuming a static hostage situation," German police wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Federal police spokesman Thomas Gerbert has confirmed that a large number of state and federal police officers were on the scene.
