Hussein Al-Sheikh, Secretary-General of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee and the Palestinian Authority official responsible for civil affairs, said on Tuesday that he had delivered a firm message to Defense Minister Yoav Gallant following the actions of revenge carried out by residents of Judea and Samaria in PA villages and the continuation of IDF operations in PA-controlled villages in Judea and Samaria

In an interview with the Al-Araby Al-Jadeed newspaper following a conversation with Gallant earlier in the day, Al-Sheikh said that he made clear to Gallant during the conversation that the current situation is unacceptable, and that the PA leadership will gather after the Eid al-Adha holiday to assess the situation and make necessary decisions regarding the future of the relationship with Israel.

He also noted that the PA leadership informed the US administration that its participation in another regional meeting with Israeli participation is no longer on the agenda.

A statement on behalf of the Defense Minister following Tuesday’s conversation with Al-Sheikh said the parties discussed the increase in terror activity over the recent period, and emphasized the need to restore stability in the area, for the benefit of both the Jewish and Palestinian Authority residents of Judea and Samaria.

Minister Gallant stressed that Israel’s security forces will operate against terrorism wherever this may be required, and conveyed a message to the Palestinian Authority regarding the need for immediate and decisive action against terrorism.

Gallant also noted that the defense establishment views the recent violence against Palestinian Authority residents with great concern and emphasized that the State of Israel will take action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Al-Sheikh further said on Tuesday that, in a previous conversation he had with the US Assistant Secretary of State, he asked the Biden administration to put pressure on Israel, and emphasized that without a diplomatic horizon, it is not possible to reach a state of peace and stability.

The top PA official stressed that all negotiations on economic and other issues should be carried out under the diplomatic umbrella, meaning that there should be negotiations to end the “occupation”.
