Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir has decided not to extend the term of Police Commissioner Yaakov Shabtai for another year.
According to a report in Israel Hayom, in a meeting held between the two, Ben-Gvir explained to the commissioner that, as far as he was concerned, he had failed to deal with the acts of murder in Arab society, and that he was busy appointing those he knows to positions without considering professional criteria.
Sources close to Shabtai claim he had decided on his own not to request another year in office, but had not formally announced his decision.
The decision marks the latest link in a long chain of tense relations and interactions between the Police Commissioner and the Minister of National Security.
