MK Ohad Tal (Religious Zionism) is working to promote a law that will allow for the first time the rabbis and representatives of Judea and Samaria to participate as members of the electoral body for the elections to the Chief Rabbinate Council and the position of Chief Rabbis in Israel.
MK Tal told Israel National News: "This is an injustice that we must correct as soon as possible, even before the upcoming Chief Rabbinate elections. The right to vote must also be granted by the large public living in Judea and Samaria."
Israel National News received last night (Thursday) the list of the body that elects (apparently) the chief rabbis of Israel. A review of the list shows that there is no representation in the body from the Judea and Samaria region.
We approached the Ministry of Religious Services with the question why there are no representatives from the Jewish People's Committee in the electorate and the ministry replied that the law does not allow for the appointment of those living in Judea and Samaria.
"The elections for chief rabbis are carried out in accordance with the law," the Ministry of Religious Services said. "The law does not allow participation of representatives beyond the green line. The Ministry of Religious Services operates in accordance with the existing law."
