IDF soldiers on Thursday evening foiled an attempted shooting attack near Shechem (Nablus).

An initial report suggests that a number of armed assailants arrived in a vehicle at one of the entrances to the city of Shechem. One of the assailants got out the vehicle and fired at an IDF military post.

IDF soldiers who were at the scene as part of routine activity spotted the armed assailant and responded with live fire to neutralize the suspect.

An additional suspect picked up the weapon and fled the scene in a vehicle.

The soldiers evacuated the suspect for medical attention and he will be later transferred to security forces for further questioning.

IDF soldiers are searching the area. No IDF injuries were reported.

The head of the Shomron Regional Council, Yossi Dagan, praised the commander of the Samaria Regional Brigade, Col. Roi Zweig, for his determined activity.

"Once again, an attempted terrorist attack in Samaria. Thanks to the correct and quick action of the soldiers of the Samaria Regional Brigade, under the command of Col. Roi Zweig, a serious incident was avoided. The residents of Samaria and the entire people of Israel strengthen you."

Dagan harshly attacked Prime Minister Yair Lapid and said, "An attempted terrorist attack is a terrorist attack, the response to an attempted terrorist attack must be determined and uncompromising. The Lapid government embraces the terrorist Mahmoud Abbas and woos him - this invites terrorism. The government must change its tune today, human lives are at stake. This is not a game. We must go to war against terrorism, its instigators, financiers and supporters, in all circles, that's the only way we will defeat terrorism."
