Allies of former UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn are reportedly encouraging him to run for mayor of London.
Sources told Huffington Post UK that Corbyn was being asked by supporters to form an “alternative power base” in London to represent his “progressive” base.
Corbyn, who now sits as an independent MP for the London constituency he has represented since 1983, was removed as Labour Party whip after his response to an Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) investigation into antisemitism within the Labour Party.
“There are people who feel that given the left’s progressive agenda through some of the metro mayors, having Jeremy do something similar in London would be a good axis,” a Corbyn ally told the news outlet. “It’s not something he has ever said he has an appetite to do, but it has been discussed by people close to him.”
The source said that Corbyn could do “more with the leftwing support he has in London” and said that becoming mayor “would be an easy win.”
But other Labour insiders cautioned that a Corbyn candidacy could split the Labour vote, paving the way for a Conservative to win.
“The people around Jeremy may want him to run, but does he really in his heart want to be the reason a Tory defeats a popular sitting mayor?” a source within Labour said. “All Jeremy will achieve is replacing a Labour mayor who has made the city fairer, safer and more equal with a Thatcherite Tory. If that’s what he wants good luck to him — but I look forward to reading about him in the dustbin of history.”
Corbyn was suspended by Labour and had the party whip removed in October 2020 after the EHRC report found that the party, during Corbyn’s tenure as leader, was guilty of harassment and discrimination against Jewish members and found “serious failings in the Labour Party leadership in addressing antisemitism and an inadequate process for handling antisemitism complaints.”
