Some 16,000 marchers converged on the Western Wall Plaza in the Old City of Jerusalem Sunday, as the annual Jerusalem Day march culminated in a mass prayer service marking the 55th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem.

The march began at 5:00 p.m. Sunday in downtown Jerusalem, led by Knesset Members, rabbis, and other public figures.

Following last year's disaster at Meron in northern Israel, police have imposed a 16,000 person limit on the march. Eight thousand male marchers marched to the Western Wall of Jerusalem via Damascus Gate, while 8,000 female marchers reached the plaza via Jaffa Gate.

Earlier on Sunday, clashes broke out between Jews and Arabs in the Old City of Jerusalem.

It was also reported Sunday afternoon that police officers shot down a drone flying over Israelis celebrating Jerusalem Day.

The drone, which was flying a Palestine Liberation Organization flag, was shot down amid concerns it may have been intended for use in an attack on marchers.
