Nearly 10,000 Israelis have contracted coronavirus but the vast majority are unaware of it, Yediot Aharonot reported Tuesday morning.
A report by the Gertner Institute will be presented at discussions scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday by the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on the subject of Shabak (Israel Security Agency) tracking.
The report shows how the infection rate in Israel is rising significantly with each passing day.
According to the statistics, since the infection rate currently stands at between 1.4 and 1.6 per patient, the first 6,321 patients infected over 10,000 people, but just 2,468 were located. As a result, Israel currently has at least 8,000 coronavirus carriers - and possibly more - who are unaware that they were infected.
In the meetings this week, the Committee will discuss Health Ministry statistics regarding the use of Shabak tracking to locate those infected with coronavirus.
During the first week of July, Shabak received the phone numbers of 6,321 coronavirus patients, and found that 70,000 people had been in contact with them.
