Former National Union MK Prof. Aryeh Eldad on Thursday started his 103 FM program with a monologue proposing an extraordinary solution to the debate stirring up Israel regarding the application of sovereignty in Judea and Samaria.
Eldad first explained: "A state can only annex what is not hers. But the Land of Israel belongs to us so what we can do is apply Israeli law to it."
At that point, he proposed a solution to the right-wing debate over whether to accept President Trump's peace plan, including recognition of a Palestinian state, or give up sovereignty to avoid that recognition.
He said there was a third possibility.
"If there was only those two options I would have stuck to the pure, non-pragmatic, ideological possibility. But I'm convinced that there is another possibility," he said. "[Levi] Eshkol applied sovereignty over Jerusalem in '67 unilaterally, and over 50 years passed until Trump's US recognized this sovereignty. And you have to remember that Menachem Begin unilaterally applied sovereignty over the Golan, and the US and its president Reagan went crazy and made threats. 50 years passed, and only then Trump recognized the Golan "
"Then it is possible and even desirable to apply sovereignty unilaterally now and thus avoid the need to involve a Palestinian state in the rest of the territory. Trump may be angry, but we already know he is willing to acknowledge sovereignty over 30% of the territory and when he is up for election and needs every evangelical vote, he will not be able to afford to attack us. That way we can eat part of the cake and leave it whole. "
