The Tel Aviv coast is the third-most plastic-polluted coastline in the Mediterranean, according to a World Wildlife Fund report on plastic pollution in the regional area published last week, i24News reported on Monday.

A one-kilometer span of Tel Aviv coast accumulates 46 pounds (21 kilograms) of plastic waste per day. The beaches of Turkey's Cilicia area were "'honored" as the first place winner of the plastic pollution ranking, accumulating 68 pounds (31 kilograms) of plastic waste per day. Barcelona's beaches came in second place with 57 pounds (26 kilograms) per day.

Other beaches named as the most polluted in the Mediterranean were located in Alexandria, Algiers, Izmir, Marseilles, Valencia and Venice.

The Mediterranean region as a whole accumulates almost 24 million tons of plastic waste per year.
