Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas was re-elected overnight Thursday as chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), reported Reuters.
Abbas’s expected reappointment came at the end of a four-day meeting by the Palestinian National Council (PNC) in Ramallah. The PNC chose a new Executive Committee, the most senior body of the PLO.
With the re-election, Abbas will remain the role he has held since 2005.
The Palestinian National Council had not met in regular session since 1996 amid political infighting between Abbas's Fatah party and the Hamas terrorist group, except for an emergency session of the body in 2009.
The meeting was boycotted by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP),which said the meeting should not take place under the current circumstances.
