A memorial ceremony marking the 16th anniversary of the assassination of Tourism Minister Rechavam Ze'evi (Gandhi) was held today (Tuesday) at Mount Herzl, attended by President Reuven Rivlin, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, ministers, Knesset members, and members of the Ze'evi family.

Gandhi, an IDF General (Res.) and believer in Greater Israel, was assassinated in 2001 by three Arabs while at the Hyatt Hotel in Jerusalem.

Deputy Knesset Speaker Bezalel Smotrich (Jewish Home) published via his Twitter account that he "is honored to represent the Knesset again at the memorial ceremony for Rechavam Ze'evi (Gandhi).A man who understood the source of our right to the land and was connected to it with all his soul."

Gandhi's son, Palmach Ze'evi, referred to the attack on his father by the Left and certain members of the Israeli media:"They marked Gandhi from the day he set out on his political path.Nothing comes out of this media campaign to try to condemn him and his legacy, nothing is new, but now he is not here to defend his name and respond forthrightly."

"They thought they would succeed [in preventing memorials in his name] but with G-d's help Bibi is standing firm and not only pushed back, but for the first time allowed construction of memorial centers in both Barkan Industrial Center and the Jordan Valley. This is a very clear response to them; there's nothing like delivering a response through action."

In an interview with Arutz Sheva, Palmach responded to the Tel Aviv school principals' refusal to commemorate Gandhi."Tel Aviv as a city has refused to commemorate Gandhi for the last 16 years, so it's a natural continuation of how the municipality behaves."

"We think the students in those schools deserve to see everything put on the table, to look at Gandhi's heritage, to see everything, they deserve that everything be open to them.Who is the principal of the school to decide to distance Gandhi because of a difference of opinions?

"This is the same factionalism that caused outcasts to pull the trigger and kill Rabin," he says. "This is the same factionalism that tries to determine whether Gandhi is kosher or not. This is the most dangerous kind of factionalism. We have to commemorate both Yitzhak Rabin and Gandhi."
